Why you need to DNF that book
To DNF or not to DNF, that is the question…
DNF, also known as ‘Did Not Finish’, is an acronym which often crops up in the bookish community. Many readers choose to DNF & some just cannot let them books go.
Throughout your reading journey you will find that on the odd occasion you are just not that into your current read. It could be you, but it could also be the book.
There may be many reasons that may drive you to “needing” to finish a book that you aren’t enjoying:
Financial obligation (I.e. you’ve paid for it, you may as well finish it.)
Review commitment (I.e. you’ve agreed to take part in a book tour.)
A “See it through to the bitter end” personality trait - This is the most common reasoning for those who I’ve come across who refuse to DNF books that they are no longer enjoying.
FOMO - Fear of Missing out.
But what is the harm in DNFing a book that is not serving you joy? Would you stay in a unhealthy relationship/friendship if it was not serving you?
In my opinion, you should treat books that aren’t for you in the same way that you treat scenarios/people that are impacting you negatively.
If you’re anything like me, I bet you have a bookshelf that is chockablock with unread titles, why not DNF your current read & choose another book from your shelf? “As one gaan, ah next one born.” Sksksk - #IYKYK
If you do anything this year, please put down the books that you are not enjoying. Prioritise you, your time & your happiness.
Like people, books may come and go, but the good ones will always find you in the end.
The moment
There is a season for every book, but your current season may need to see to you shelving that book for the foreseeable, or the the moment.
