Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser

“Come through baby hairs.”

My first ever adult graphic novel.

I’ve seen this books praises for a number of years now, so I was amped up & ready to love it too.

I didn’t unfortunately.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see Black female friendships being amplified, but there were a few issues I found in the way that the characters in this graphic novel showed up for each other.

I’m sorry but if your friend tells you that they have been mentally struggling for one, please don’t offer them citrine precious stones when they’ve told you that they are considering taking medicine. It’s usually not a decision that they’ve come to lightly & the fact that they’ve considered medicine usually means that they want to actually get better. It was at that moment in the book that I just realised this book wasn’t for me. It still irks me a month after reading it.

The themes addressed felt basic AF, especially in respect of stalking /harassment/mental health/microaggressions & family issues. If we’re going to highlight these topics, let’s really get into it.

Anyway, the illustrations were GORGEOUS & distracted me from my lack of enjoyment of this graphic novel.

Which one of you told me this book was good?! 👀😂

What overhyped books disappointed you?
